Hunger in the world
Hunger remains one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges of our time. Despite technological and economic advances, millions of people around the world still suffer from malnutrition and food insecurity. Understanding the scale of this problem is essential if we are to mobilise the resources and efforts needed to tackle it.
Scope of the problem
According to the latest estimates, around 690 million people in the world suffer from chronic hunger. (Homeless World Cup). This represents almost 9% of the world's population. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this situation, adding millions more to this already alarming figure.
Main causes of hunger
Hunger remains one of the most crucial problems on planet Earth, affecting around 690 million people and exacerbated by factors such as poverty, conflict and climate change.
Poverty
Poverty prevents access to adequate food, keeping families in a cycle of malnutrition and food insecurity.
Conflicts
Armed conflicts disrupt food supply chains and force millions of people to flee their homes, exacerbating hunger.
Climate change
Droughts, floods and other extreme events destroy crops, reducing food production and security.
Limited access to agricultural resources
Farmers lack land, water, modern technology and markets, reducing food production and income.
